Computing has become increasingly mobile, with laptops shrinking in size and improving in battery life, commuters can work an extra few hours every day on the way to and from work. Staff can communicate with the office via mobile phones with forwarded emails; Directors can operate their entire businesses from one laptop with a wi-fi connection. The mantra is 'work from anywhere, anytime'.
Of course data is just information stored on physical devices, but information is power in today's climate. The revolution in mobile computing has also resulted in increased theft and loss of these devices. A USB flash memory stick can have your entire client portfolio saved onto it, and is very easy to lose. A laptop is worth some money as hardware but it is worth a lot more as a source of information to data thieves. They can extract huge amounts of sensitive data from a stolen hard disk which can then lead on to further crime. One stolen laptop could cripple your brand, your reputation and your bank balance.
