Cybersecurity Awareness:
Don’t make it easy for them
Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026
It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year, the theme is ‘Don’t make it easy for them’. This aims to encourage strong cybersecurity practices to make life difficult for cybercriminals.
This blog post showcases top tips that turn good habits into lasting protection.
1. Passwords
The problem: Using the same simple password across multiple accounts. If one account is compromised, then other accounts will be too.
The solution: Create strong, unique passwords for every account. The longer and more random, the better. Then let a password manager, like LastPass, handle the rest. Once set up, it auto-fills your logins so you get maximum security with zero extra effort.
Varied, strong, unique passwords are your first line of defence.
2. System Updates
The problem: Outdated software is an open invitation for hackers. If your systems are unpatched, you are leaving your digital front door wide open.
The solution: Turn on automatic updates across all business operating systems, mobile devices, and applications and review your systems regularly.
Staying ahead of cyber threats requires proactive maintenance, not just reactive damage control.
3. Multi-Factor Authentication
The problem: Cybercriminals use automated tools to crack, guess, and steal passwords, so if your business relies only on passwords to protect its accounts, a single data breach can hand hackers the keys to your entire network.
The solution: Enable and set up MFA across your business. MFA adds an extra layer of defence by requiring additional verification to log in. For maximum security, upgrade to phishing-resistant MFA, like passkeys or authenticator apps, rather than SMS text codes.
Increase and harden your defences to keep your data safe.
4. Phishing
The problem: With the advancement of AI tools, cybercriminals can now send highly realistic and convincing phishing emails. These messages create a false sense of urgency to click a malicious link, download harmful attachments, or hand over sensitive information.
The solution: Never trust an email just because it looks familiar. Be suspicious of anything unexpected, especially requests for passwords, payments, or urgent action. Even messages from “friends” or colleagues can be compromised. Implement a “Pause, Verify, and Report” policy across your business, and ensure your team has a simple, one-click button to report suspicious emails immediately.
Phishing emails are one of the most common ways hackers steal your data. Stay vigilant.
5. Staff Training
The problem: Technology alone cannot fully protect a business. A team that doesn’t have the knowledge or understanding of key cybersecurity issues can compromise your entire network.
The solution: Turn your workforce into your strongest layer of defence with regular, up-to-date and engaging training. Tailor the training to high-risk departments like Finance and HR, and build a culture where employees feel safe reporting mistakes.
By empowering your staff with the knowledge to recognise cyber threats, you close the human gap that hackers rely on.
Summary
Cybersecurity Awareness Month reminds us that protecting our digital lives is an ongoing commitment. By putting the tips we’ve shared into practice, you can take meaningful steps to strengthen your defences against ever-evolving threats.
Make these habits part of your daily routine, share them with colleagues, friends, and family, and keep learning. Small, consistent actions create a much stronger shield for your data and devices.
Stay aware, stay secure, and help build a safer digital world.
Keep your business secure.
